{"title":"Necklaces","description":"","products":[{"product_id":"sea-urchin-cocktail-necklace","title":"Sea Urchin Necklace","description":"\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eThe Story of Sea Urchin\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis design is a testament to how impactful my years underwater have been.  I love the ocean, and if you do too, this might be the design for you. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe biggest influence in my sister’s art has always been nature, and the glorious sea urchin of our youth and of Earnst Haeckel’s prints is central to our pantheon.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is something divine about the intricate skeleton of a sea urchin.  It has a natural geometry, a royal shape, and it begs to be touched.  Who would have thought that this beauty was what you would find underneath a sea urchin’s protective spines? \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat are you hiding under your protective spines?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI think sea urchins are beautiful, but I also love to eat them.  My local sea urchins have not yet been discovered by the Japanese, so we have no idea how they should be served, but the rest of the world seems to know exactly what makes a sea urchin special.  In my twenties I went as far north as Rebun-shi in Hokkaido to eat uni, and I’ve harvested my own achinos near Folegandros, but some of the best sea urchin I’ve ever eaten was at Nobu in San Diego. I hope you have a chance to eat some soon too. It’s always worth it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eMy Favorite Parts of this Design\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA miniature sculpture, this design is spectacular.  Its tactile, its fun, it can be worn to a gala or to the beach, and every time you wear it, you will get compliments.  You'll find yourself touching it, fiddling, enjoying it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEven though the inspiration for this design comes directly from nature, I tried to abstract the design to make it iconic.  I think there is a tremendous amount of beauty that can be captured with just gold and stones, and even my friends who have never seen a sea urchin skeleton love this design.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe meaning behind this necklace makes it fun to wear, and the depth and proportion bring an seeing dozens of exquisite examples on that beautiful fall afternoon at the museum, I still had no idea.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEvery winter Beatriz would create a mandala at my parent’s vacation home near Key West.  My mother would donate the surplus from her sand collection, each from a different beach or desert around the world, gifted by friends on their travels or collected by her. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt was amazing to see how my sister would weave their colors to construct a new mandala every year.  Upon completion, it lasted only a few hours or days, as the sand would slowly disperse with the breeze.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI'm really proud of this design, I think my sister would have loved it too.\u003cimg alt=\"\" represents the person. \u003cspan\u003eEach pendant includes the seven colors of chakra, an ancient framework for recognizing the energies in a woman’s body, extending radially and allowing the wearer complex, I wanted to include more, and to not be simple.  I kept adding layer upon layer to it, until I saw it not as a set of layers, but as a whole.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat is why this pendant is a mandala.  With all of the complexity of the universe, with its myriad paths and energies, it is a whole, and that is where its beauty is found.  Without every layer, it would not be feminine.  My grandmother \u003cspan\u003eIta\u003c\/span\u003e says that a woman’s femininity is her greatest power.  I don’t know if that is true, but I think it is definitely worth considering.  My grandmother’s advice is always very good.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePink also happens to be the rallying color for the war against breast cancer.  My wife Sarah died from metastatic breast cancer, and I do not want my daughter to die.  This collection is my daughter Anaïs’ favorite color, but it also captures my hope that we can prevent all of our daughters from dying from this terrible was a boy, I have loved classical mythology.  I fell in love with the Greek versions of the myths, and was thirsty to learn their origins.  The more I looked into the pre-Hellenic world the clearer the matriarchal lineage became. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMythology survives with us as fictional stories, but there is one real life leader that inspired her own rich mythology: Cleopatra. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA female leader like Cleopatra seems exceptional today, but I like to imagine a time when a great leader like Cleopatra was not an exception, but the rule. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMy wife Sarah introduced me to the eye symbol, and even though it has had many meanings over the centuries, I like to believe the eye represents the strength of female leadership. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSarah was a natural leader, and there was no place that it was more clear than as a mother.  Under her patient and ever-watchful eye, she was able to see clearly, to empathize, and to protect her loved ones. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs a mother and as a leader, I believe these characteristics are a requirement for visionary leadership and that\u003cspan\u003e Cleopatra also led with these strengths.  Like Sarah and Cleopatra, I hope \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003emy design reminds you of how great a leader you can be too.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eMy Favorite Parts of this Design\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEyes have been reproduced in jewelry since before the ancient Egyptians, and it was very important for me to make my version unique. It wasn’t enough for me to interpret my Bonbon as an eye, I needed to push the design even more.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMost contemporary eye designs are a set of concentric circles, but as many of you know, that was just too simple for me. As a nod to the elegance and femininity of Cleopatra, I include eyelashes in the manner of the\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eEye of Horus\u003c\/span\u003e, so prevalent and important in Egyptian iconography.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYou might think I am completely irreverent for turning each of the stones upside down and reverse-setting them for this design, but in the process, I was forced to create a new geometry to support the unfamiliar reflections of these typically hidden facets, which I believe led me to a complete design that feels perfectly classical.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI must confess, I am in love with my Bonbon design. A good smile can make you smile too!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI think smiles are one of our superpowers, and in a world that often feels difficult and disconnected, even a stranger’s smile can make us feel better, sometimes even wonderful. \u2028\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLike the light from a disco ball, I like to think of a smile as radiating outwards, creating thousands of rays of light that touch everyone around you.  As the light of a smile reaches each of us, almost by magic, there is a good chance that we will be inspired to smile too.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMy wife Sarah was known for her smile, and its ethereal ability to light up a room. Her smile made the people around her comfortable, and created joy out of thin air.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSarah's sickness did not stop her from smiling, and it was impossible not to be wrapped in her love. I find that even today, when I remember Sarah’s smile, it brings me incredible joy. \u2028\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI designed my Disco Bonbon, to remind myself of how powerful a smile can be, and hopefully make you smile too.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eMy Favorite Parts of this Design\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis design is a true celebration of stones and metals.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt’s rare to find reverse set stones matched with each of the four main precious metals, and like perfect diamonds, each array of stones captures the light around us and radiates it forth.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe simplicity of the pairings does not limit their lessons. Each combination unlocks a deep secret of jewelry, and as I explore each one, I learn a bit more about my art.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYou might think I am completely irreverent for turning each of the stones upside down and reverse-setting them for this design, but in the process, I was forced to create a new geometry to support the unfamiliar reflections of these typically hidden facets, which I believe led me to a complete design that feels perfectly classical.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI must confess, I am in love with my Bonbon design. Small enough for every day, but significant enough to have recognizable power, every time I hold a Bonbon in my hand, I feel its magic, and I can’t help but smile.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI chose to name this collection after my favorite chocolate confection, the\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003ebonbon\u003c\/span\u003e, because I believe there is a special magic in exploring a box of exquisite chocolates.  With each piece, there is the potential to find yourself in its unique flavor and reveal a special joy.  My hope is that I can create Bonbons as diverse as your shells, colorful sea urchins, and sea biscuits, the slightly plumper cousin of the sand dollar.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cmeta charset=\"utf-8\"\u003eAs we share time snorkeling together, I can only smile when I think about how much jewelry and undersea life she has seen at such a young age.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eMy Favorite Parts of this Design\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI don't usually design anything flat, as I think volume is so important, but the silhouette of the arrowhead sand dollar (my favorite sand dollar species) was too enchanting for me to let it go.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cmeta charset=\"utf-8\"\u003eWhen you combine the five inlets \u003cmeta charset=\"utf-8\"\u003eand the peeking keyhole with the glorious flower found on all sand dollars and their close cousins the sea biscuits, I had all the inspiration I needed.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI covered the face of my sand dollars with granulation, and you can almost feel the tiny spines that cover this animal when it is alive.  In gold and silver, these granulations dance in the light as your sand dollar hangs from your neck.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI hope you find
